Just For The Halibut

Traveling is something that some people dream of doing. It’s also something that Carole Augustine is does often. She and her husband have traveled all over the world. “We go to Thailand every year for Thanksgiving,” she told me.
In fact, as it turns out, she and her husband are in Alaska from Miami Beach, Florida, building a summer home. The last time they were here looking for a home, Carole’s husband decided to go fishing. Although she didn’t dislike the sport, Carole felt that fishing could get a bit boring. She agreed to go, but not without bringing along her latest book.
The boat launched on that cold morning. There was an icy wind blowing across the choppy water. It was about five thirty in the morning when they got their boat out on the waves.
Carole and her husband set off with an appetite for adventure. They were prepared to catch themselves a bunch of fun (and perhaps some fish as well). As her husband got their equipment set, Carole settled herself down with her book. Neither of them were prepared for the surprise that awaited them.
It had been a while since they’d dropped the line. They were beginning to give up hope when Carole’s line jolted. Of course, being so into her book, she didn’t notice it at first. But then it jerked again and Carole jumped into action.
Before she knew, that fish was hooked. The fish was quite strong, though at the time she didn’t notice the weight. All she wanted was to get that catch on board.
The struggle was long and difficult, but finally, the halibut was on board. It was probably the biggest one she’d ever seen, let alone caught. It weighed in at a whopping 72 pounds. As it turns out, that was quite a catch for such a fish.
A record was made of this fish. They put it through the Fishing and Game Association. That fish was the world record weight for the women’s fishing category. Carole now holds that record and has held it for a while. She has yet to be usurped from her position.
To think, it all happened while looking for a little vacation home up here in Alaska.
