Seward Drive Trivia
Jules Hinske
14 June 2007

Now on our second day in Alaska, the kids had a fun time enjoying the scenery all around them. In between the many adventures was a whole lot of drive time. To keep everyone entertained, the vans took up a friendly game of asking and answering riddles using the radios. Everyone joined in and soon the entertainment turned into a competition. The questions ranged from intellectual ones to silly ones and everyone was laughing.
Some examples of these riddles were:

What kind of underpants do clouds wear?
Answer: Thunder pants

What do you call a fish with no eyes?
Answer: A fsh

What do two skeletons say to one another before they eat?
Answer: Bone-Appetite

What happens once in a minute, twice in a week and once in a year?
Answer: An E

What is in the middle of nowhere?
Answer: An “H”

As you can tell, the questions were mostly random things, but for the two-hour drive to Seward, everyone was kept happy. The trivia questions also formed a sense of bonding and unity among all the vans, especially the friendly arguing and bantering. The final winner was the Jennie van, known as the Naked Van, or simply Ishtar’s Van. Now another strategy for Ishtar’s van to keep entertained was a circuit of questions about life, goals, and future plans. The Mackat Van had fun making bracelets, compliments of Britta Seifert for teaching everyone. The first moose was also seen on this drive by the kids in the Shannon Van. The prize for being the first to see a moose on the trip is ice cream for everyone in the van. This of course raised some very hefty competition for who could be the first person to see a bear. No bear has been spotted so far, but when it is, hopefully it is spotted at a distance.

The “Real” First Day

Today was breathtaking. Alaska is just so beautiful. The first night here was a little different. Outside it looked like it was 5:00 P.M when it was actually midnight!! We stayed at the Church of 1000 Logs. It really did have 1000 logs! After the interesting night at the church, we all had delicious bagels. I had one blueberry bagel (which was very good) and a cheese bagel (which was kind of gross), all covered in regular cream cheese. The side was cherries (my favorite) and orange juice. After our brief breakfast, we all took our vans to Costco were we all met. After handing out coolers and just sitting around, everyone except the nutrition committee went to Sam’s Club. There we split into our van groups and went shopping (for snacks that is). Our group got gummy bears, crystal light, vanilla wafers, bananas, apples, licorice and Doritos. After Sam’s Club we all met up again at Costco and just hung out and jammed to some music. When we left, we decided to stop by a park. The park was more than I thought it would be. It wasn’t a place with a swing set or a slide or a jungle gym. It was a nature park with trails to hike and waterfalls to gaze at. I got some great picture opportunities. It was so much fun to just hang out on the trail with your friends and to experience some of the beauty of Alaska. The people who live here probably don’t know what extraordinary things are here right under their noses. After the park, we had a little fun in our vans with some trivia questions over the radio (that I started with my logic book and Wayne, our driver’s, awesome knowledge). We also saw a moose on the way and I got a picture of it. The other vans thought that they saw it first, but they didn’t. When we finally arrived to our destination, we went to a really good restaurant called the Bake Shop. We were served excellent reindeer sausage soup with beans (uh-oh). We also went strolling around the gift shops. One shop had very nice jewelry and a huge jade stone on exhibit being cut with a saw. I went running when we arrived at the campground in Seward and found a great spot with a little stream right next to the mountain. Everything here is beautiful. We are camped right next to the mountains. It was a little bit of a difficulty trying to set up the tents, but with a little bit of teamwork, we got the tent up and ready for sleeping.
This whole trip has been a huge change, even though it has only been two days!! From the time change, which is four hours, to the landscape, it’s all very different. I know that these next three weeks will be a life changing experience, and I am really looking forward to it!!
