A Special Thanks From Britta

When people ask me why I keep coming back to Alaska with the same group year after year, I tell them that, for me, the trip is a different experience each year. When I applied last fall to return as a Junior Leader, I had no idea how truly different my fourth trip to Alaska would be.

In a whirlwind week in late May, I jumped after a rogue Frisbee, tore the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in my right knee and ended up having knee surgery three weeks before we were to leave for Alaska. The injury changed my life in many ways, but I was determined not to let it take Alaska away from me. It was a bit of a stretch, but I secured the go-ahead from my orthopedic surgeon to go on the trip - although I’d have to spend half of the trip on crutches, keep up on my physical therapy and promise not to climb any mountains.

Although I was ecstatic that I would make it to Alaska, I was also very nervous that I would find the trip to be just too difficult on crutches. What I found instead was the most beautiful backdrop and most supportive crew that anyone could ask for in their recovery. The Alaska Great Lakes Project has always been special to me not simply for the wonderful places we visit, but for the amazing group bond that forms in the three and a half weeks, and this year’s trip has shown me that more than ever.

For the constant support, hugs, concern; for the little things – carrying my bags, washing my dishes, opening doors; for asking my how I’m doing; for tolerating the crutches that were always awkwardly stuffed in the van; for all the encouraging words; for going out of the way to make be feel included and supported; for doing my physical therapy exercises with me so I wouldn’t look silly; for sharing a special “hike” through Denali National Park; for wheeling me through airports; for hauling my 10 lbs. of laundry uphill both ways; for sharing with me the excitement of my first few steps; for pushing me 6.2 miles in a shopping cart in the Midnight Sun Run; for all the compliments and kind comments; for sharing my tears and triumphs; and for always, always BEING THERE, I can never thank any of you enough. In tough times you find your real friends, and I’ve got 79 great ones. Thanks to everyone for making my Alaska experience wonderful, memorable and healing.
