Finding the Perfect Place

Can you imagine doing relief work in New Orleans, meeting someone, and then flying halfway across the country to hang out with her? Mira Carberry, a 22-year-old laid-back woman did just that. After working in New Orleans in the same relief organization as Carmen File, Carberry agreed to come to Homer, Alaska with her to work. Carmen is one of the owners of Two Sisters Café and Spit Sisters Café and she lives in Homer.
Carberry is now on her second week working at Spit Sisters Café, a quaint little bed and breakfast on the Homer Spit that attracts locals as well as travelers. She enjoys her job at the café. “It’s pretty good,” she laughs, “Because I screw up a lot, and people are pretty forgiving.” Carberry, an eccentric and intriguing young woman with short dark hair, was born in Los Angeles. She is living in a tent while in Alaska, which she enjoys. “It gets cold sometimes,” she explains, “ But for the most part, it’s pretty good.”
After only two weeks at her job, Carberry likes her work and likes the people she meets. When asked what her favorite thing about her job was, she replied, “Putting the cream cheese into little containers,” Carberry explains, “With a device called a beaver tail.”
With all the cool places she has traveled to, Carberry has an interesting idea about where she’d like to live. Of all the places in the world, she would choose to live in the ocean. “If I could live underwater with the jelly fizzles,” she laughs, “That’s what I’d do.”
Carberry really likes Alaska, but she is planning on leaving in August. “I’m from California and I miss, like, really warm weather,” Carberry says, “And I’ve got some friends to visit. Things to do, people to see.”
