Roughing It

Have you ever thought of dropping your hectic schedule to move to a more relaxed town? Nick, a tall brown haired, twenty-two year old guy, moved to Talkeetna, a rustic town in the middle of Alaska, eight months ago from Minneapolis, Minnesota to see what Alaska is all about. “I moved to Alaska because I had never been here before and I wanted to try something new,” Nick said, “[Living in Alaska] is definitely different.”
Nick lived in Minneapolis for two years before moving to Talkeetna. While living in Minneapolis Nick worked at a National Co-op, was involved in theater, and did some property management. He had heard of Talkeetna before and it had interested him so he decided to move there. Nick is now a server at the local Talkeetna restaurant “The Road House.”
Nick came to Alaska to “rough it” rather than stay in a hotel, so Nick and his dog, Pessy, live in a log cabin. “My dog and I live in a 16-by-20 foot cabin with no running water or heat.” Nick spends a portion of his time carrying water from town and chopping wood for heat.
When Nick’s not chopping wood or carrying water, he and Pessy like to sit by the river and go on walks. Nick enjoys shopping at the local shops and just relaxing. “ It’s a cool town, it’s a very cool town,” Nick said.
Nick has been in Talkeetna for eight months and doesn’t know how much longer he will be there. Nick wants to move to Hawaii and see the rest of the world. “I’m up here for a while, I’ll see how long it lasts.”
