Do The Craziest Things First

Would you ever think of leaving your life and dropping everything to move up to Alaska? Cheerful, curly red-haired, freckled Karie Vix, who is now twenty-seven, was an accountant in Kansas when she decided that she was to young to settle down and moved to Alaska. She also used to live in Oklahoma and Chicago, and now lives in Anchorage, Alaska. Vix works for the Royal Celebrity Tour Buses and is a Tour Director/Guide. Vix has lived in Anchorage for four years and works as a tour director in the summer and as a substitute teacher in the winter.
Karie Vix wanted to come to live and work in Alaska because, “ I thought there was a better place to be in my twenties than Kansas.” Vix decided to quit her job there because, “ I would never get [to Alaska] unless I worked there.” Vix describes Alaska as, “the only place I feel comfortable.” Vix believes that you should always, “do the craziest things first because you can do the other things later.” Take risks and do things that are more exciting and enjoyable in the beginning and when you are ready to settle down, start doing the other things.
Vix loves her job and where she lives. Her favorite place in Alaska is Talkeetna because, “ this is a really cool place,” Vix said. “ There are always a lot of tourists, but the town is not too big, so it always feels homey and comfortable.” Vix loves that Talkeetna is a small town, and not a big city like Anchorage. “ Sometimes less can be better,” Vix said.
Someday Vix hopes to own her own company in Alaska because she feels that both the population and tourism is going up. She also hopes to have a cabin in Talkeetna in the summer and to own a house in Hawaii for the winter because she feels that Alaska and Hawaii have a connection. “ Hawaii and Alaska are like nowhere else in the lower forty-eight. I don’t feel the rush to get places,” Vix said. “ It’s refreshing.”
