Alaska Is...

       Alaska is
Carefree profiteers
Hanging it all on
Nineteenth century
Maritime
Statutes and
Legalized
Corporate
Irresponsibility

Why should they be held accountable for
One alcoholic captain who
Abandoned rehab and
Downed five shots in
Downtown Valdez before
Steering right through that silent sound
Ripping a hole in the hull and heart, and
Shedding a viscous trail in its wake?

Final Reflections

This trip has drawn to a close, and I have learned several things. I have been reminded of the power of "place" in teaching the young and old alike. Alaska opens minds and hearts to new possibilities. I have been encouraged by connections formed between the generations. Marshall raises good kids. Finally, my belief in multi-age education has been reinforced. It is powerful when younger kids learn from older kids.
