Daily Report from the Journalism Committee:
The Plane Ride That Lasted an Eternity
17 June 2008
Nick Bolger
Today we started our journey to Alaska. We all came to the middle school and said our goodbyes for the next three weeks. Then we loaded the buses and started to Chicago. Three hours later we got to the airport and checked in and made our way through security.
Once everyone got through security all the participants flooded the McDonalds that was right by our gate. After a long wait in the airport we finally boarded the plane and began the trip to Alaska. Andrew Stevens said, “I wasn’t very nervous even though I haven’t flown in a commercial airliner before.” The flight takes about six hours so they had video players that you could rent for your viewing pleasure. The players were limited so the back of the plane was not able to rent one. Some of the participants found other ways of entertaining themselves such as junior leader Tyler Blowers who had gold fish fights and made his food talk for entertainment. He said that the six-hour flight was the longest time of his life.
We were finally in Alaska, but before we could leave the airport we had to go to luggage claim. We pulled the luggage off the conveyer belt and filled our u-haul with the luggage and got on the school buses that took us to the church in Palmer. After we got our personal luggage we set up our sleeping bags and settled in for the night. Participant Josh Webb said, ”being able to sleep felt good after a long day.” |
