The Native Way of the Heart

As I circled the heart of the Native Heritage Center, I prepared myself for a unique learning experience. I followed the trail surrounding the pond, stopping at each exhibit to learn more about the culture behind it. Although I acquired some knowledge about each tribe through the tour, I now know that there is nothing better than learning first- hand.
I was introduced to Sam Herman, a truly Native Alaskan by one of our own, Doug Murch. Thanks to his extraordinary height, I had the opportunity to meet a man I will not forget. It all started with the fascinating native games. Doug was take as he gazed down at the activities. However, it seemed that Sam Herman was not so taken with Doug’s height.
After an awkward first meeting, Doug found Sam so intriguing that he decided to introduce him to me. Sam Herman Sr. is a Native Alaskan from Nunivak, Alaska out in the Bering Sea. Born in 1930, Sam traveled to Bethel (on the mainland) in 1948. He came here for work, ut ended up finding something more special.
Shortly after arriving, Sam worked in different schools and three native hospitals as a maintenance man. He was also in the National Guard with the rank of A6. He loved working- it helped him support something he loved more- his family. “I feed them so they would get no hungry.”
When asked what the best thing that has happened to him in his llfe, Sam replied that his family is the best thing that has happened to him. Sam has eleven children and has been married to his wife for over sixty years. He tells me that they all make him happy.
I learned a lot at the Native Heritage Center, but I learned more than just facts from Sam Herman. Sam taught me part of his language. The “two words most important” are quoyana- thank you, and pioa- goodbye. The most important thing I learned from this kind, soft- spoken native was love- piniakumpkin. Not only did he teach me the word in his native language, but the regard in which he holds the ones he loves is something that should be taught and practiced more in the world. It was a great honor to meet this amazing man.
