Alaska Is...

Alaska is the perfect ring, bought at a shop after a hot meal of soup and rolls.  It is colorful, chunky and silver.  It fits just close enough that sometimes it is a struggle to take off, especially after a climb up a mountain when your hands have swelled.  It is a ring you keep on, no matter what, even when cooking halibut over the fire—because it would cut a hole deep in your stomach if you lost it.  It is a ring you show around to everyone you see because the newness never wears off.  You wear it on your hand, but it has a place close in the deep depths of your heart.  It is your constant companion.  It’s there on your hand when the rest of the world seems to be very far away, a touchstone.  It is a reminder of the good things in life, and where to go when you need to find yourself.  As long as you have that ring on your finger, you carry Alaska inside your soul.
