Fish Philosophy at Work
By Ashley Earl

The week I have spent in Alaska has taught me many things, including the importance ones attitude can have on their life. Today I met a girl whose cross-country team definitely knows this.
Brianne Johnson is a 21 year old college student working as a cashier at Denali Grizzly Bear Campground. She works there in the summer for her grandma, attending college at the University of Alaska for the rest of the year. She loves it here, and decided to stay in Alaska for both school and a summer job because of how much she likes it. “Alaska is one of the most beautiful places in the world; it’s huge, beautiful, and unique, I would defiantly encourage someone to live here,” Brianne said.
Where Brianne lives now there are not many people her age, or many things to do for fun, so she spends a lot of her time running, an old hobby. Even though Grizzly Bear Campground may not always be a ton of fun for a 21 year old, Brianne makes the most of it by keeping a positive attitude and doing something she loves, running. “In high school I ran cross country, I loved it because everyone had a really positive attitude and was nice we also had a lot of fun and pushed each other to be better, I had a great team,” she said. Brianne’s team taught her something she has kept with her in life, the fish philosophy. There are 4 parts to this philosophy: be there, play, make their day, and choose your attitude.
“I really loved physical education in high school, I mean, who doesn’t,” Brianne said. Because of her love for physical education Brianne decided to make it her major in college, and hopes to get a job involving it. She wants to stay in Alaska for a very simple reason: she loves it. “I want to get a job in Alaska because I really have no desire to live anywhere else.”

Brianne and her team show that having a positive attitude and living by the fish philosophy can help you accomplish your goals and make you a better person in the end. She has applied what she learned there to her life, and is happier because of it. She is reaching for her goals, and is confident she can achieve them through hard work, and the application of the fish philosophy. “I’m happy here, I love it. I am going to finish college and become a physical education teacher here in Alaska. I have a positive attitude, and I really enjoy what I’m doing with my life, “ Brianne said.
