Alaska Is...

Alaska is for discovery. The land is wild and alluring in so many ways, fro the top of Mount Healy, to the bottom of Kachemak Bay. Every day seems to bring a different adventure and challenge. Alaska is not just a place to visit; it’s a place to discover.  We’ve seen moose with twin calves, sea otters protecting their young, versus a hungry orca. We’ve also walked above the timberline in the clouds. Alaska is also about self-discovery, Alaska is about challenging ourselves, and making that extra effort. Alaska is about getting outside your comfort zone. Alaska is about working as a single group building relationships. Alaska is, above all else, discovering yourself and your surroundings.

Final Reflections

Wow! Our Alaska journey is coming to a close. This is both a happy time and a very sad time. I’m happy that I will be able to see Michelle, Emily, and Spencer again. I’m happy because I made new friends. I’m happy that I was able to see and do things I never dreamed of. I’m happy because a lot of the people I met are going to be better than they ever thought they could be. I’m happy that I could share these experiences with so many wonderful people. I’m happy that I opened up more. I’m happy because I have a little AGLP that will always be with me. At the same time this is a very sad time. I’m sad that I wont see all my new friends every morning. I’m sad that I can’t eat every meal with seventy people. I’m sad that hug time will only be with three other people. I’m sad that we wont have any more fights over padiddle. I’m sad that I am leaving Alaska. The old saying, “All good things come to an end,” doesn’t fit here. I know these students learned a lot about themselves and about Alaska. I know it has changed me; it will change how I see my family, it will change how I see my third graders, and it will change how I see others.

This is a memorable trip, and I feel that I really need to say “thank you” to Dale “Ishtar” Rosene. This is a special trip because he has made it so. Thank you Dale for sharing this incredible experience with me. I will never forget my time in Alaska.
