Seeing New Things

Interviewing in a new city, state, and practically opposite sides of the continents, I realized how nerve racking it could be to find someone to share stories with. Then I sat down with Kari Jolink, an easy-going, fun-loving teacher from Marshall Michigan.
Kari Jolink is a van driver for the Alaska Great Lakes Project. “ This trip also helps me earn my masters degree in environmental science,” said Kari. Kari is earning her masters at Hamline University in Minnesota. “ I was up in Minnesota last summer for a month,” said Kari “I will be graduating and earning my masters in December of this year”.
To Kari, this trip is means more than just earning her masters, it’s also to spend time with her husband and the kids she started her career at Marshall Middle School with. Her husband Joel Jolink is also a van driver on the trip. Both teach at Marshall. Kari, starting her career at MMS 3 years ago, and Joel, starting his career at MMS 2 years ago.

Seeing new things, and driving a lot, Kari is very excited for the next 3 weeks. “I’m very excited to go whale watching and visit exit glacier,” said Kari. Kari is also excited that this is her 3rd year going. “I have gone once as an 8th grader, once as a junior leader, and now going as a van driver” Kari said with a smile. Kari says this has been a great trip so far and can’t wait to see what happens next.
