Grizzly Bear

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to run a campground? Chris Johnson, who is the manager of Grizzly Bear campground in Denali, Alaska, says that it is an interesting experience because she gets to meet people from all over. Two of her employees, who both work at the front desk, are from Russia and she has been associated with people from all over the world. “I try to learn a word from a different language everyday.” Said Chris.

“My parents started the business in the early sixties when they homesteaded the land in Denali,” Chris said, “ originally there was nothing here except forest land. Now my dad builds a new cabin each year.” Chris has lived in Alaska her entire life and her parents moved there because they were drawn to a rural life away from the city. “The campground that your group [AGLP] is staying in is the original site that my parents built 50 years ago.” Chris told me. The area is similar to Tri-lake Trails in Michigan. The only major difference is that Grizzly Bear is near a river instead of on three lakes and has a spectacular view of mountains.

Chris’s parents moved to Alaska because they were drawn to a simple life and now she lives in Fairbanks and spends her summers in Denali with her parents. Because her parents decided to start a campground business Chris wound up with an amazing job and tons of experiences that she wouldn’t have gotten otherwise. She gets to befriend people from every point on the globe; a perfect description of her job is exactly what she said, “interesting.”
