Alaska Is...

Alaska is not what I expected. In the back of my mind, I half expected it to be barely inhabited, almost like a different world, where the wilderness rules. I expected us to do something exciting, something that we couldn't do in Michigan, every day. Instead, there are a lot of people - a lot more than I had anticipated. It is like a different world, though with a beautiful view of the mountains anywhere you turn. No matter where we drive, there is a forest of pines on each side. Nature is a force impossible to reckon with, and it seems like everyone who lives here understands and respects that. Most of the things we do here are really fun, but it's a little disappointing when some of the things we do are things we could easily do in Michigan. I wish we could do more things specific to Alaska, like our all-day trip into Denali, as well as our hike along Tri-lakes Trail, but even if we don't I'm content to just explore our campgrounds, look at the scenery, and take in the overall beauty of Alaska.

Final Reflections

Applying for this trip was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Over the course of these three and a half weeks, I have been able to see and do more than I have ever done. Anyone would be lucky to experience hald of what I have on this trip. I've kissed a sea star, seen whales breech, and stood on the top of a mountain. Alaska has become something like a second home to me, leaving me with no doubt that I will indeed return one day.
