Daily Report from the Journalism Committee

Beautiful First Day by Tyler

What a beautiful first full day. Seeing new beautiful sites and new people. Near two o'clock, we went into Anchorage for a whole new experience: A Solstice Festival. Though the festival itself seemed like an average American Flea Market, it was much more. With all the authentic souvenirs and the great Alaskan scenery, there was not a greater moment in the day. With the many attractions, the gifts, and the food, but all remained second to the unique people and the breathtaking scenery. Getting lost in the beauty of the mountains was an inevitable and common occurrence for many, myself included. The unique people: dancing, singing, and impersonating, merely doing so to entertain us. I realized how lucky we truly are today. How many people get to see things so beautiful? Such unique people? Such remarkable scenery? The answer is very few. The sites of the mountains, moose, and even clouds told me one thing: this trip is going to be the trip of a life time.

Rise and Shine by Maddie

"Rise and shine," were the first words that the sleepy AGLP participants awoke to this morning. It was a busy morning, but one that called for sleeping in, because everybody was up by 8 o'clock. Breakfast was bagels and beverages and we decided to eat outside. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping and everyone was having a good time. After breakfast, we all played a round of "Sharks and Minnows" and sang a song! After the morning activity, the adults went off to get our vans while everyone else took a walk around the city. The mountains were beautiful; they looked as if they went on forever. One participant said, "The Mountains look so different from the plane flight than on the ground." Now, because the Solstice Festival in Fairbanks was moved to a different day, we decided to attend the Anchorage Solstice Festival. We loaded up in our vans and headed out; on our drive we even saw a moose! We stayed at the festival for 3 hours; it basically consisted of buying souvenirs at the flea market and exploring around town. After the festival, we drove back to the church for some relaxing time to journal or work on personal assignments, hot dogs for dinner, and then games in the parking lot. As soon as game time ended, swim time began; we packed our bags and headed for the pool! We swam for about two hours, and it was a lot of fun, with diving boards up to 3 meters tall and water basketball. Then we headed back to the church to get settled, do a bit of packing for the morning, and go to sleep. It was a fairly active day, and we can't wait for what tomorrow will bring!
